Caleb Jones joining the Colorado Eagles makes a lot more sense today, because he’s now a member of the Colorado Avalanche organization.

On Tuesday morning, the Avalanche announced they had acquired the 26 year old defenseman in exchange for forward Cal Burke. Jones is the son of Denver Nuggets assistant coach, Popeye Jones.

Both players will continue to play for the Eagles for now. however, don’t be surprised if Jones plays plenty of games in the NHL. Because he cleared waivers, they can stash him in the AHL until they really need him.

From a Colorado perspective, this makes a ton of sense. The underlying numbers for Jones look very good, and he’s a smooth skating defenseman who fits their system. The team needed depth, particularly a 7th defenseman, and he helps fill that role.

Jones played 73 games for an awful Blackhawks team last year, picking up 16 points.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Jones joins the team in the near future. Colorado moved Pavel Francouz to LTIR on Tuesday morning, allowing them to recall Justus Annunen and Riley Tufte. Once Ivan Prosvetov arrives, they won’t need Annunen around anymore, and can bring Jones back up, if they choose to.
