Evan’s Daily: Hughes Puts NHL On Notice, Newhook’s Opportunity

Jack Hughes stayed healthy and showed the NHL just how good he was last year. This season, he might be gunning for the Art Ross Trophy.

And in Montreal, Alex Newhook looks like he’ll be getting another opportunity to show he can be an NHL center.

Down in the AHL, the Colorado Eagles got their first win of the season, with some familiar names  from Avalanche camp playing a big role.

All that and more in this Saturday edition of Evan’s Daily.

Colorado Hockey Now

Tomas Tatar showed just how smart a pickup he was on Thursday, jumping up to the top line and contributing immediately.

It’s time for the first regular season stock report for the Avalanche, and time to give Sam Girard credit for his strong start.

On Saturday, the Avalanche will take on the Hurricanes at home. We might even see Cal Burke in a Hurricanes uniform. Turning Point should return on Sunday, since I’ll be back with full use of technology. I was under the impression the “evan10” code was going away, but it’s still active if anyone wants to use it for a yearly subscription.

Eagles get their win

Riley Tufte, Peter Holland, and Caleb Jones all had multiple point games in the first win of the season for the Colorado Eagles.

It’s just a matter of time before we see Tufte and Jones get a shot in the NHL, but it will be interesting to see if Holland earns a contract.

Around the NHL

Jack Hughes is putting the NHL on notice.

With the overtime winner on Friday against the Islanders, the New Jersey Devils star now has 11 points in four games this season, and looks unstoppable.

Just imagine if the Avalanche had won the NHL draft lottery in 2019…

There was only one other game on the NHL schedule (brilliant stuff), and it ended a little nasty, with Rasmus Anderson going high on Patrik Laine.

Something tells me he’ll get a call from the league.

National Hockey Now

We’re just a little over a week into the NHL season and the Pittsburgh Penguins need to make changes. Not good.

What’s the hold-up with the Boston Bruins and Danton Heinen?

Are the Philadelphia Flyers better than we thought?

With the injury to Kirby Dach, more will be put on the plate of Alex Newhook in Montreal.
