Avalanche Will Face The Stars In Second Round; Schedule Released

Published

on

Avalanche nhl

The Dallas Stars outlasted the Vegas Golden Knights in Game Seven on Sunday evening, scoring an early goal in the third period to break the deadlock and win 2-1, meaning they will be the opponent for the Colorado Avalanche when round two starts.

They won’t have much time to rest either, because the series starts in just 48 hours on Tuesday evening. Because the Stars won the Central Division and finished with more points during the regular season, they’ll have home-ice advantage in round two.

The two teams played four times this season, with the Avalanche coming out on top in three of them. Two of them were massive come from behind victories in Dallas, with the Stars only win coming late in the regular season at Ball Arena. As we learned last series against the Winnipeg Jets, the regular season doesn’t matter a whole lot when the playoffs roll around, so you might as well throw that record out the window.

It’s really not a surprise that the Stars pulled out the win against the Golden Knights. They were clearly the better team in my eyes, but Vegas are champions, and pushed them to the edge. Now they’ll face a very different Avalanche squad, who are built on speed and skill.

There were 35 goals between the team teams in the four games this season.

Here is the full schedule for the series, as well as the other Western Conference series between Vancouver and Edmonton.

Colorado Hockey Now will once again be on the road for this series, as I’ll be booking my flights to Dallas tonight. Stay tuned for all the Avalanche coverage you need in the postseason.

Interesting, Edmonton and Vancouver start on Wednesday? They have both been sitting around for a few days. Would have thought they would start on Tuesday and Colorado and Dallas would start Wednesday. Maybe a small advantage for the Av’s with a little less rest for the Stars.

Karl Keen

It is a bit weird but you have to remember that both the Nuggets and Mavericks are in the playoffs too so scheduling is a lot more tricky.

Sasha landprecht

Way to beat the stars is.

Score on PP. Stay out of box.
Tighten up defensively
Georgiev plays lights out.
Throw every puck at the net.

Stars a different breed. Hope boys don’t come out rusty

Karl Keen

Game 1 is the game the Avs need to go out and set the tone. Show Dallas that it is not as big as Vegas, but will still forecheck, put the hurt on and oh, we will burn you with speed as well. Game 1 should be more of an adjustment game for Dallas than it is for us. Have to take advantage of it!

Evan, Not exactly true. You wrote: “Now they’ll face a very different Avalanche squad, who are built on speed and skill”. You are talking about offense. However, Avs have the worst D in the league and shaky goaltending. Geo is a good goalie, but not an elite one. Also, Dallas D is not a slouch but that doesn’t matter. It’s all about who scores more goals and obviously Dallas has an advantage. Above all, it will be about coaching. Dallas head coach is better than Bednar. Bednar will be out-coached by him again. Bednar needs to go back to game… Read more »

Makes me miss Alexander.

Jeffrey Anderson

Ha! I was thinking the same for a few seconds.

Joseph Crotty

My sentiments exactly

Rick

It is Alexander. In one of his recent comments he talked about ‘sub-par coaching’ which is a term Alexander used several times.

dk

I dunno. No Newhook worship in degressive’s posts…

Aggressive

I never liked him from the start.

Aggressive

I am Alexander and I approve this message…..not!

AxJx MacReady

Just so we’re clear here, you think Vegas is built on speed and skill the same way Colorado is? Because Evan’s comment wete about the Golden Knights, who were slow and played a very defensive game, not the Stars.

Also, I can’t wait to see if the OP feels the same way in their analysis a week from today. I suspect they will have a very different perspective.

Blake Vogel

Man, super insightful. Have you been out of a job as HC long with deep cuts like “it’s all about who scores more goals and obviously Dallas has an advantage”? Maybe tweet Bedsy and see if you can prevent a travesty by getting him to review tape on a game that defined the shape of his cup-winning effort the next year?

Also, it was game 6 against Vegas. . . 🙄

So you have it all figured out… I guess there’s no reason to even watch this series.., thks for the expert advise lol….

Don’t feed the troll…

More irrational insights from your cat?

Aggressive

Please leave my cat alone. He has more insights than many homers here. I am an Avs fan but not a homer by any measure. Has anyone seen the game last night? There was a time when the Avs speed and uptempo game dominated other teams. Not anymore many teams caught up to this and can easily match the Avs intensity. Add to that a horrendous D and a shaky goaltending and the picture becomes clear. Playoffs is about coaching and adjustments. Bednar loses in this department. I’m scared!!

h00pak

I’m not saying the Avs (not the Av’s) have this wrapped up already, but did you watch any of the first round?

Aggressive

Watched the Avs and many other teams as well. What’s your point? Avs played well except for Girard, the Avs kreptonite.

Ari Sachter-Smith

Mr Aggressive, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this comment section is now dumber after reading it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Dallas gave up a ton of goals in regular season too. Only recently, after the acquisition of Tanev, did their defense stabilize. They are a huge challenge but if Avs bring the same play they brought against Winnipeg, we can definitely beat them.

Aggressive

Well, sure. But first the highest paid and best players need to show up!! Mackinon and Rantanen were MIA. Their contribution so far was not commensurate with their pay. There is no first line anymore. Also, will Bednar insert Jonesey instead of Girard? That’s crucial! You mentioned Tanev and his impact on D. Additionally, the Stars inserted Faksa into the lineup and it brought dividends. Its all about adjustments my friend. And please no one should compare the lowly Jets to Dallas. Ousting the Vegas giants was no small feat by any means.

Joseph Crotty

Alex, glad to see your back stirring the pot as usual. Mack and Miko both have 9 pts (e.g., Makar also) in 5 games this post season. Only three players have better offensive stats – McDavid, Draisaital, and Zibanejad. Girard’s defensive game on the PK and pairing with Walker are keys to COL winning. Faksa’s goal was divine intervention – try it 100 times and get it right once. WIN’s GAPG lead the league while their net minder is the presumptive Vezina winner Bucky. Throw shade on WIN if you will, but it doesn’t change the fact that COL is… Read more »

Girard and Walker? Uh…seriously! Dallas players will be drooling behind the bench when they see this magnificent pairing, they may call upon the zamboni just to clean their saliva of the ice. This will be a lifetime opportunity for them to improve their personal stats. Georgiev better wear pampers!!!

Ari Sachter-Smith

They each had 9 points in 5 games

Aggressive

Well, yes! But first your highest paid and best players need to show up! They have been MIA in the playoffs. There is no first line anymore. You mentioned Tanev and his impact on their D. Dallas coach also inserted Faksa which paid dividends. Will Bednar do the same? Will he insert Jonesy instead of Girard? Its crucial. Comparing the Jets to the Stars would be a huge mistake. Ousting the Vegas giants was no easy feat by any measure.

I was looking forward to this series but after reading “aggressive’s” post I now know the AVS have no chance. Ha just kidding. Looking forward to an exciting series.

Aggressive

It’s all in Bednar hands. Maybe Landeskog can help figure out a good strategy. Avs miss him and his leadership big time. Avs skating without a true leader. Ah!

Ryan white

So sad dumba$$ people like you can run there mouth. Too bad they can’t ban you.

I can’t believe I gotta be associated with am idiotic av fan. You are a disgrace.

I agree with Sasha. Go F yourself.

JEREMY

This is going to be a SERIES. Will be shocked if it doesn’t go 6 – 7. Kept going back & forth on who I’d rather the Avs play. I admittedly didn’t watch much of Dal/Veg outside of game 7. I feel by the end Vegas looked tired & old. So I came to the conclusion that they were the “easier” opponent. But I digress… I feel confident that if the Avs play the way they did in games 2 – 5 they can beat anyone. I still think the goaltending on any given night can be a letdown. But… Read more »

Dallas doesn’t have the scoring depth imo. Avs have the speed advantage and coaching. Dallas has decent defense and a good goalie. The jets were a way better team and more complete team that Dallas is imo and had the best D and goalie in the league. I think the Avs should do pretty well against them but you never know in the playoffs. These teams know each other so home ice doesn’t play as much imo. I’d so much rather play Dallas over Vegas cause when it comes down to it, experience is the deciding factor in this series.… Read more »

Last season when Vegas beat Dallas in the conference final I figured it must be Ryan Suter´s last dance. He was old, beat up and was constantly late.
But here he is again playing more than 18 minutes in the play offs and is +2.

The Avs have to target Suter.
Maybe have the big guys tire him out and then have MacKinnon fly by later.
Avs in 6.

Dallas Stars – Colorado Avalanche. It really is one of the bigger name match-ups at least in both franchise’s histories. 3 times we lost a big Game 7 to them. Twice the Avalanche came out on top, but that was in the first round of 2004 and 2006 when both teams were beyond their peak. This will make the 6th iteration of this match up, which equals the number of times the Avs faced the Red Wings in fact. The Avs had a surprisingly great first round, but this core of payers has a bit of a history of not… Read more »
