Scott Wedgewood Injured as Chaos Ensues at Ball Arena

DENVER — Scott Wedgewood departed the Avalanche’s game against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday after forward Zach Benson fell onto the goalie, causing an injury.

Wedgewood instantly went down in a ton of pain but the officials did not blow the whistle. The Sabres regained the puck and scored, making it 4-2 with Wedgewood lying on his backside inside Colorado’s net.

The Avalanche’s bench argued the call. Head coach Jared Bednar was visibly angry while arguing with the refs. Several of Colorado’s top players also had conversations with the officials. Eventually, Bednar challenged for goalie interference but was unsuccessful.

Mackenzie Blackwood came in and instantly had to kill a penalty.

Makar for captain

Hopefully it’s not serious. I wonder if avs will trade for another goaltender depending on the severity.

Or I wonder if they will call up mandolese or miner.

I commented earlier on this article that Evan Rawal reported seeing him move around the lockerroom in a walking boot. Pure speculation but if it’s a high ankle sprain instead of a season ending broken ankle or ACL the Avs should give him 8 weeks to get right. There are 19 games in the next 8 weeks. Blackwood will get a break during the 4 Nation Face Off so there’s a possibility that Wedgwood misses just 2 or 3 starts. Avs could use a veteran #3 goalie for the playoffs but they could make-do with those AHL guys if they… Read more »

Awful non-whistle there, and shame on Zach Benson for celebrating such a bush-league goal after injuring another player – accidental though it likely was. I’m disappointed no one on the Avs made Benson pay, though Girard and O’Connor did their best. And I suppose gut-punching them with two 6-on-5 goals and an overtime breakaway game-winner will suffice as karmic punishment for the Sabres.

Game was too close to go after him. Avs did a great job showing restraint and going for the 2 points. Gaurantee Benson is fighting someone next year when they play. He is going to have to answer for it.

Iโ€™m sure the entire NHL will hear about or see Bensonโ€™s classless move hereโ€ฆhe broke the code and heโ€™s gonna have a target on his back for awhile. Hope itโ€™s not serious but my guess is a broken ankle or torn ankle-area ligament. If that skate blade gets caught and thereโ€™s force on the ankle it doesnโ€™t take much to cause a popโ€ฆspeaking from personal experience on that.

For sure a decent amount of time out. Looked like a ligament tear or sprain. Unreal that little ass had a celly with Wedgey laying on his back from an accident he was involved in.

Evan Rawal reported seeing Wedgewood moving around the lockerroom in a walking boot. This is pure speculation but hope that means a high ankle sprain and he misses 4-6 weeks instead of something season ending like a broken ankle or an ACL

Benson is classless. Seriously bad look for the NHL on the non whistle for an injured player. Player Safety talk is an illusion. Total BS!

The ONLY people on the planet that think that goal should have been counted are Buffalo fans/team. Even the non-hockey fan sitting next to me on the couch called bullshit. Easily one of the worst officiating decisions I’ve ever seen.

Goalies are and should be treated differently than skaters. However, the refs have discretions here. Rule 206 is pretty clear about this…look it up. Now, had P. Kelly been quicker to the puck, the whistle would have blown, but since Benson was quicker, the refs let the play continue. I personally think they should have used better judgement/discretion, but it is what it is. Agree with other commenters, the best revenge was the comeback win!!!
