Good & Bad: Devon Toews Scores Twice, Avalanche Win Goalie Battle vs Florida

Published

on

DENVER — It felt like the Avalanche weren’t going to get anything past Sergei Bobrovsky and his posts. The Panther’s goalie was excellent to start the game. When the puck beat him, it struck the iron and stayed out. At least the first two times.

But then Colorado broke through.

Devon Toews had two goals — the first of which trickled in after hitting the crossbar — and the Avs defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1 at Ball Arena. Colorado won its 25th game at the halfway mark, improving to 7-0-1 in its last eight.

Jared Bednar’s club also collected seven of eight points during the homestand. They gave up just one goal for the second straight game in what ended up being a solid goaltender battle between Colorado’s Mackenzie Blackwood and his idol, Bobrovsky.

“Both teams created a fair amount of offense with special teams and five-on-five when it’s all said and done,” Bednar said. “But both goalies were good, so it ended up being a real tight, low-scoring game.”

Blackwood made 26 saves and improved to 7-1-1 since joining the Avs almost a month ago. He’s faced 226 shots in seven starts and one relief appearance and has given up just 14 goals.

“Teams playing great in front of me, responsible hockey, scoring on their chances, and it’s fun to watch,” Blackwood said. “It’s fun to be a part of.”

Blackwood continues to impress his teammates and coaches. They thought they were going to get an upgrade in goal but they didn’t expect it to be this vast. Blackwood hasn’t given up more than two goals in any game. Even when the early goal goes in, he manages to lock things down the rest of the way.

The ability to shake off those goals wasn’t something he had early in his career. But with the strong team in front of him, Blackwood is already shifting how he approaches those situations. He did it again against Florida — the Panthers were being outshot 16-4 but had the game’s only goal nearly two full periods in.

“I would say they give me confidence in the game. We go down early but I know if I do my job, we’re going to still be in the game no matter what,” Blackwood said. “Every night, they’re playing so well, so offensively talented. Not every single night it’s going to be the case, but most of the time, if you do your job, they’re going to come out with a win.”

Florida scored first, capitalizing on a Colorado breakdown in the neutral zone. It was Carter Verhaeghe’s 10th of the season and the only goal through 20 minutes.

The Avs had a carry-over power play into the second but couldn’t capitalize. They finished 0-for-4 but not without their chances. Bobrovsky made four saves in the first two minutes of the middle period to keep his team ahead.

Eventually, Toews broke through to tie things up. Both Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar hit the post or crossbar before Toews’ shot finally beat the goalie.

The defenseman added his second of the evening later in the third off a play that started with a strong puck battle from Juuso Parssinen. Colorado’s newest forward addition also screened the goalie when Toews’ go-ahead goal was scored.

“Confidence was an issue in Nashville but it doesn’t seem like it is here,” Bednar said of Parssinen, who the Avs acquired from Nashville on Dec. 28. “The offensive side that he had two years ago, that’s where we want to get him to and that’s a good flash of it tonight.”

The Avs outshot Florida 16-14 in the third period. Blackwood stopped every shot he faced and Mikko Rantanen added an empty-net goal for good measure.

Good: Devon Toews heats up

This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Toews’ recent offensive surge. Colorado’s top-pair defenseman struggled early in the season with an injury and it kept him off the scoresheet. Over the past several weeks, Toews’ defensive game has started to build back to his standard. And now, the offense is catching up.

We all marveled at his complete effort on the game-winning goal against Buffalo last week. Toews played Tage Thompson man-on-man before stealing the puck and breaking in all alone for the game-winner. He also scored in the game before that against Winnipeg. And of course, added two more against Bobrovsky.

Suddenly, Toews has four goals in his last four games and seven total points.

Bad: The missing piece on the PP

The Avalanche’s first two PP chances were solid. The second two? Not so much.

It’s clear that they’re missing the big body in front — the spot often filled by Valeri Nichushkin. I get what Bednar is trying to do with Casey Mittelstadt on the top unit but the reality is, until Nichushkin is back — which should hopefully be soon — Artturi Lehkonen is better suited for that role.

With MacKinnon, Rantanen, Mittelstadt, and Jonathan Drouin as the four forwards, the power play is often trying to do too much and looking for the extra pass. Having Nichushkin parked in front makes it easier to fire pucks on net and allow the big Russian forward to take away the goalies eyes. It’s basically what Parssinen did to Bobrovsky on the game-winning goal.

Makar for captain

Finally someone said it. When the avs had a bunch of injuries in the beginning they were scoring on the PP. We have so much talent on the PP but they try and force passes and it gets turned over. Granted the panthers PK was aggressive. Put Lekhonen on 1st PP till nuke comes back and jusso on 2nd PP to be net front presence. Blackwood played a solid game. I noticed the last 2 goals against him were odd man rushes. Just hope the avs can start finishing and scoring. At least 4 post tonight. Also did mark messier… Read more »

It seems of late a lot of the alarmists & know it alls have either disappeared or started posting comments with a lot more infrequency. It turns out this team isn’t going to miss the playoffs?? And that it was as simple as getting healthier & getting goaltenders that can actually stop a puck. It’s funny how all of the “The Avs defense is horrible” people have gone MIA too. Anyway..good hockey game. And the Panthers should scare the hell out of any team in a 7 game series. They were built for playoff hockey. I thought Parssinen had easily… Read more »

What happen to de Haan

Jeremy

Been wondering that myself for 2 weeks. I heard an Avs pod talking about how Malinski’s play has fallen off recently. Well, no crap the kid has been stuck on a pair with Middleton.

He & Dehaan were a solid 3rd pair, why screw with that? I have no clue what this organizations new found fascination is with Middleton. It’s not as if he’s new to the organization.

Glendon Gulliver

If that was the DNVR podcast, besides saying they wished Malinski would return to his play earlier in the season, they also said that the Avs really only needed to pick up a 3C and and a 3rd pair left d-man. Their most realistic picks for the Avs were Jake Evans and Brian Dumoulin. Most desirable 3C if the Avs could make it happen would be Yanni Gourde.

Jeremy

It was actually. I agree with those being their two most pressing needs. Not sure why the Canadiens would want to trade Evans. He’s having a career year & the Canadiens have a legit shot at a wildcard spot. He’s a useful player, they’d be better served to re – sign him.

Dumolin I’m not too familiar with. But he fits the bill of what they need on paper.

EnzoSin

Many of them were Fourgiev fans.

Jeremy

I know a few were his defenders. But is there actually such a thing as an Alexander Georgiev “fan”.

I stick by my prediction from Nov. He’ll be playing in the KHL within the next 1 – 2 years.

EnzoSin

Heh you’d be surprised mate. You should have seen some of the Varly and Jose “Three or Four” puck bunnies i got into arguments with in past years. I do agree he’ll likely be out of the league in that time span.

I do not think Mittelstadt does much of anything on PP1 except balance out the TOI of some of the other skaters. Lehkonen or Colton would be much better than him. Too many passers and not enough scorers. I would rather not have Lehkonen taking a beating in front of the net, but he is a better option than Mittelstadt. So glad to see Toews starting to shoot the puck. Too often he and others on the team seem hesitant to shoot and pass the puck instead. Right now the other team can clog the middle knowing that the Avs… Read more »

Mack and Mikko used to pass a lot to the net front. Now they only look to the slot, or occasionally shoot to score. That 3rd option of pass/shot for tips isn’t coming anymore. Sometimes just forcing the puck into net front traffic is the smartest play. The problem with slot, when the pass is picked, it’s a rush the other way. Toward net results in an iced puck sometimes, but no scoring chance against.

ricoflashback

That was quality hockey tonight. Lots of skill on display. I think itโ€™s safe to say, knock-knock, that Devon Toews is past the ailment that was slowing him down earlier in the year. Blackwood was outstanding. And Parssinen showed some life. Nice screen on Toews 2nd goal. Just an observation, but there have been many players that have floated in and out from the Avs roster. Why they donโ€™t realize what an opportunity it is to play for a great organization in a great city is beyond me. You would think that competing for a Stanley Cup, year after year,… Read more »

Id rather see prishchepov play instead of innala and falhaber. There’s literally no 4th line at all

The Avs have a 4th line, but they are playing as the 3rd line. When Nichushkin returns, someone from the top 6 will have to move down to the 3rd line. Colton? Whoever it is will make the line better, but the line still needs a true 3C. Yesterday, Chicago’s Ryan Donato was listed as a possible trade to the Avs. The Avs bottom 6 scoring is the team’s biggest weakness right now.

Brad Jacobs

Parssinen plays center and did some with Nashville. Put him at 3C with Colton on one wing and rotate (name your Eagle) until Wood returns or the Avs make another depth trade. The Kivi/Kelly/OC line is a “set it and forget it” 4th line for the rest of the year…man are they productive together.

Glendon Gulliver

The line of Kiviranta-Kelly-O’Connor has played well together, but they are not productive. That is the reason Bednar said they are really a 4th line. Florida’s 3rd line is Verhaeghe (29 pts)-Lundell (26 pts)-Boqvist (15 pts). By comparison, Kiviranta is Colorado’s leading scoring bottom 6 forward with 13 pts. Verhaeghe has had over 70 pts the past 2 seasons and is on the 3rd line.

Kelly Clifton

Colton play before breaking his foot wasn’t a streak, rather it is who he is. It is who he is, a fast, average-sized scoring top 9 winger with an edge and willingness to get to the hard places early and both retrieve pucks from the corners and tip or shoot at goal front. We got a lot more production from him at wing than from his contribution at 3c. They need a real playoff 3c and I am sure they must be working on that trade. I really like Parsinnen, he is play-off sized and fast. It’s looking like he… Read more »

Bednar is hoping Parssinen returns to his form of 2 years ago when he scored 6G/19A in 45 games. He could be the 3C with Colton on wing, if the Avs get a scoring winger to play with them. That could be easier than getting a good 3C. I would rather they get a good 3C, as Colton is currently the only center that could move up to 2C in case of injury. A 3rd line of Colton-3C-Parssinen could be a welcome addition, allowing Kiviranta-Kelly-O’Connor to become a true 4th line.

So what parssinen donato?? Colton as 3rd line.

I’d take it! Donato is a center. He has 11G/11A so far this season and has a $2M cap hit. He may be easier to get than a Jake Evans or Scott Laughton.

If they traded for Donato I’d go prishchepov and parssinen as a line until nuke gets healthy

Jon

I’m a prospect nerd and I’m really excited about Prishchepov but let’s not forget that he’s a 20 yr old former 7th round pick who was passed over in his first 2 draft eligible years. He’s already played a ton more NHL games than any other recent late round picks in the league. I don’t think this is a case of the Avs not giving a prospect a look since I believe they also really like him and are taking the long view. The NHL is not a development league. He’s getting big important minutes with the Eagles and that’s… Read more »

I don’t follow the Eagles at all. And only see Avs prospects when they get called up for 2 – 3 games in a pinch & play 5 – 6 mins lol. Based on you saying you’re a nerd for the prospects & development. I’m personally curious do they have anyone down there that could legitimately be a bottom 6 option next year? I’ve given up on Olaussen, Foudy is always hurt. And I’m not familiar enough with the rest of their roster. I really thought at the tail end of last year that Jason Polin really seemed like a… Read more »

I share the same thoughts on needing to fill in around the edges internally but nope, you’ve already seen the Eagles top forwards play when they were injury call ups. Dan Hinote is the assistant HC in charge of the offense so I’m sure Prishchepov is his top project. One intriguing prospect is Zakhar Bardakov. We acquired him from the NJD in the McDermid trade. He’s in the last year of his KHLdeal and before his season began, he alluded to an interest in coming over. I believe he has the same agent as Nabokov. Bardakov has good size and… Read more »

Jeremy

I remembered that they got a KHL prospect from NJ in the Macdermid trade. That would be an unreal piece of business if he actually came over & was any sort of useful player.

Taylor makar prishchepov bardakov would be the best bets

Makar’s post hit was the single loudest post I’ve ever heard. What a cannon! Glad that Toews could get the pipe luck Makar and MacKinnon were lacking, which helped break the seal on Bobrovsky. A side question: has a team ever had the most empty net goals for and against in the same season? Because I feel like that’s where we’re trending this year. The Avs have proven incredibly deadly when facing an empty net, which is a very important but underrated skill – particularly come playoff time.

Tdub

Mikko’s recent empty netter was a beauty; like a full court heave that finds nothing but net.

Jeffrey Anderson

Mikko leads the NHL in empty netters: 7 of his 24 goals, or 29%. That seems unsustainable for the season.??
