10 Observations: Blackwood Still Can’t Believe He Plays for the Avalanche

Published

on

DENVER — Mackenzie Blackwood kept referring to his teammates as “they.”

We often see goalies talk about skaters as if they’re not included in the mix, but it almost feels like Blackwood is still marveling at the team he plays for.

“Every night, they’re playing so well, so offensively talented,” Blackwood said of his teammates. “Not every single night it’s going to be the case, but most of the time, if you do your job, they’re going to come out with a win.”

Blackwood made 26 saves in Monday’s 3-1 triumph over Florida, improving to 7-1-1 since joining the Avalanche on Dec. 8.

The goalie is sporting a .938 save percentage and a 1.69 goals-against average in Colorado.

10 Observations

1. In his last game with San Jose, Blackwood faced 54 shots and let in three goals against the Florida Panthers. That was a month ago today. What a difference a month makes, right? He only saw 27 shots against Florida this time around — 14 of which came in the third period with the Panthers trailing for most of it.

1. Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, and Devon Toews. All three of them hit the post or crossbar in the second period but only one of them ended up in the back of net. It really felt like one of those nights where the Avs were going to get goalie’d.

2. It was of course Toews who scored, firing a shot that hit the crossbar, then it came down and hit the back side of Sergei Bobrovsky and trickled in. Toews added another and has five goals this season and four in four games. He’s really starting to heat up offensively.

I wonder if he can get to 50 points for the fourth straight year. He’d need 30 in the last 41 games to do it.

3. It’s amazing to see Blackwood just consistently put up the numbers that he has. He’s yet to let in more than two goals in any game since being acquired. MacKinnon said earlier in the morning that he’s been the best goalie in the league since the trade. Statistically, MacKinnon is correct.

4. Going back to the low number of shots he saw, Colorado has been playing well defensively as of late. During this four-game homestand, the Avs have given up 22, 21, 23, and 27 shots. Two of those games went to OT.

5. Mikko Rantanen extended his point streak to 14 games. He also leads the league with seven empty-net goals. The record in a season is nine and he’s almost there just halfway through the year.

6. Credit to the Avs. This is the first season where it feels like the opposing team pulling their goalie almost means absolutely nothing. The Avs have done an excellent job of tightening up defensively late in games and scoring empty-net goals to put them away. They often score two of them in one night.

6. Loved Juuso Parssinen using his frame to screen the goalie on the second Toews goal. Those are the types of plays that make a bottom-six forward valuable.

7. Seems like Blackwood and Trent Miner are already good friends. Scott Wedgewood was also in the locker room post-game, without a boot, and the three netminders were having a great time. Chemistry has meant a lot lately.

8. Remember last season when Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov both recorded 100 assists? MacKinnon has 52 at the halfway mark. Can he get to 105?

9. Bednar is no longer hiding how much he was disappointed with the previous goalies that started the season. When asked about the team tightening up defensively, the coach mentioned that they had several strong defensive nights early in the season but “then pucks end up in your net and you’re criticized for it.”

10. Three points during the homestand for Ross Colton after getting the primary assist on the game-winning goal. Would love to see him get back to the guy he was before the injury. Funny enough, that was just his second helper of the season in 24 games.

It didn’t get a lot mention last night because of the saves Blackwood made against Tkachuk, but Manson totally leveled Tkachuk after Blackwood’s saves. That is the kind of hit the team needs in the crease.

Makar for captain

For real. About time someone clearing the crease.

I think it was last year when the avs put up 51 shots on blackwood and won in shootout. Thats when I was like I hope they get him.

Rob McLennan

That was literally my favorite moment of the game

Can someone explain is de Haan or ludvig injured???

I never hear anything about them 2.

Once nuke is healthy they are just missing a depth dmen and middle six forward

Glendon Gulliver

Ludvig is on a 2 week conditioning stint with the Eagles. I think de Haan has just fallen out of favor.

Makar for captain

Wow if de Haan as fallen out of favor I think the avs should trade for a 6th dmen.

Middleton is cool at times but not for the playoffs.

I think we’re seeing now why the Avs locked Blackwood up for five years after only four games: they knew they had something special, and knew if they waited any longer and he kept playing at that level, his contract was going to get much bigger. I’m willing to bet in 2-3 years at the latest, people will see his deal as one of the biggest bargains in the league.

ricoflashback

Yes – that contract is going to look better and better. Plus, you have a guy in Blackwood who is thrilled to be with the Avalanche. At 28 years old, he’s entering the prime of his career. Mackenzie’s calmness in net and his demeanor is huge for this Avalanche team. It’s enabled them to focus on other areas of concern without always doubting your goaltending. Now, it’s all about getting better and gearing up for the playoffs. There still might be an addition to the Avs roster at the trade deadline and there is always the hope (more of a… Read more »

I’m feeling like Blackwood is going to be the second best goalie the Av’s ever had, although, one can make a reasonable case for Varly. What a find by CMac. Nice rebound game by the offense and it great to see Manson throwing his size around. He’s so tough when he’s healthy.

And a healthy Devon Toews who showed what a difference a couple weeks make. I think he was playing hurt albeit not hurt enough to be kept out of the lineup. Really a fantastic game by him last night. I love Manson when he hits like that. Josh is also very underrated as a puck carrier and he almost scored on a breakaway that he created himself.

I said on the day of his contract that it was a great deal. Grubby got more than that over 3 years ago. This will be in the lower 1/3 of starting goalie AAV within 2 years, possibly the bottom 5 league wide. Once again the Avs were able to fill the crease on the cheap. Georgiev ultimately went south, but his contract was a nice bargain as well.

Yep, not bad considering how many wankers on here that said it would be impossible to aquire him from the Sharks. Still waiting for said wankers to eat crow. ::crickets chirping::

First off, I will eat crow happily if the Avs win another cup. As for the trade, I didn’t realize that the Sharks coveted Kovalenko as much as they did. That trade is nowhere near the Lindros/Forsberg deal, or the Duchene fleecing. It is however, another surprising one way deal pulled off by the Avs. Our cups have come on the backs of these crazy 1 sided deals, maybe we get another. Not eating crow yet, but team is winning because they are playing the defense first system again. Look at the shots against, they are putting our tendys in… Read more »

Hi, Sharks fan here coming over from SJHN: for context, the Sharks GM Grier, took this deal because he’s stuffing the cupboard with as many draft picks as he can get but also Blackwood was so loved by the team and the entire organization, when this deal came in Grier took it in part, to allow Blackwood to go to a contending team who coveted Blackwood’s skill and play. When the Sharks acquired Blackwood, at the time he was considered an injury prone goaltender who wasn’t good enough to be a starter so the Sharks got him essentially free (they… Read more »

I was on the fence about the goaltending shake-up, but now that we’ve seen a good many games with the ‘Woods, I’m totally convinced. Hopefully Bednar starts Miner against Chicago though. Minnesota is playing for real this season and I would like to see the best tendy we have play in that game. Although it appears that Kaprizov will not play, the Mild are still winning a lot without him. They should not be taken lightly.
