Good & Bad: Nichushkin’s Hat Trick Lifts Dangerous New-Look Avalanche Over Toronto

on

DENVER — On a night where the goaltending was uncharacteristically shaking, the new additions sparked the Avalanche’s offense, and a Valeri Nichushkin hat-trick catapulted them to victory.

Colorado trailed the Toronto Maple Leafs by two goals on Saturday but climbed back to win 7-4 at Ball Arena. Ryan Lindgren, Brock Nelson, and Charlie Coyle each had a primary assist, recording their respective first points since being acquired.

Jonathan Drouin, Nathan MacKinnon, and Joel Kiviranta had the goals before the Avs added two empty-netters to seal the win. The offense was coming from everywhere. The depth was doing its part.

But it was still arguably the team’s best winger, Nichushkin, who excelled most.

It proved again that the top of the Avs lineup has never been an issue. They just sometimes need help. That was what the front office identified as a need at the trade deadline.

Especially in the center position.

“We’re built different,” head coach Jared Bednar said. “We are big, strong, and long in the middle of the ice. We’re still a fast team, but we added some size, and that’s hard to play against.”

The Leafs led 4-2 after scoring a power-play goal midway through the second period. It came after Colorado was unsuccessful on two opportunities, largely because Anthony Stolarz was playing well in goal.

Then, the new-look third line got the comeback going.

Sam Malinski made a good read to find Ross Colton, which opened up a break for the Avs. Colton fed it to Kiviranta, and the Finnish winger was able to deflect it past Stolarz to make it 4-3.

It took almost a full period before the next goal. From behind the goal, Coyle, who centered the third line, kept his eye on the slot and fed it to Drouin for a goal.

“I just want to go out and try to do what I can to help this team win,” Coyle said.

They kept their foot on the gas and drew a penalty. On the ensuing power play, Nathan MacKinnon stepped up.

Even when the top line is having a tough night offensively at five-on-five, they still used a red-hot power play to put them ahead.

“The power plays on a heater for sure,” MacKinnon said.

Nichushkin eventually added an empty-netter to complete his first career regular-season hat trick before MacKinnon added another to become the first player this season to 100 points.

Good: Nichushkin and Nelson Chemistry

We know very well that Bednar likes to shuffle his top six pretty often. That’s why MacKinon has chemistry with Martin Necas, Artturi Lehkonen, Drouin, and Nichushkin — any two of them on the top line at any given time would make sense.

Nelson will eventually have that same chemistry. After one game, the early returns on him and Nichushkin are looking good. It’s not just that Nichushkin scored twice pretty early in the game with Nelson on the ice. It’s the way they both connected on several plays throughout the night. There were some misplays here and there, but it was no different than Necas’ first game with MacKinnon. You could still see something special.

Nichushkin’s second tally was set up by Nelson and the two embraced with a giant hug that felt like a new friendship was forming.

“He’s just such a big body, good skill, good range, and moves extremely well. I just try to support him,” Nelson said of his linemate. “He can kind of create offense for himself, which we saw both times tonight. So I just try to get him the puck and support him.”

Bad: Shaky Defense, Shakier Goaltending

This wasn’t as bad in hindsight because things settled in after a rough start to the game. Which in itself is a good thing.

The Avs started the game with a lot of flash, but any time the Leafs countered with a rush attack, they’d catch Colorado flat on its heels. And if it wasn’t that, it was a misplay by Drouin in the defensive zone that directly led to another goal.

These things happen in every game. They’re just more apparent when the goalie struggles. It was an tough start to the night for Blackwood but he managed to hold the fort down after the fourth Leafs goal while Colorado did its thing at the other end.

The Avs outshot the Leafs 34-21. Blackwood made 17 saves.

What are we waiting for to offer a contract extension to Nelson?

Jeremy

It has barely been 48 hrs since the trade. I’m sure they want to see the fit (at least I would hope). Before they offer a 33 year old a 3, 4, 5 year deal @ 7 or 8 per. Although it’s not as if they have any alternative options.

Yeah, they don’t have any other choice. They simply cannot give up what they gave up to get him then let him walk to FA and be right back to not having a 2C with no assets to acquire one.

Avs Already know what kind of player Nelson is. Nelson is nuke 2.0 minus the speed. He’s strong on the puck. I mean the give and go on nukes 2nd goal was a beauty. They should sign him to a 3 year contract at least.

MacKinnon is good at playing hockey.

The defence was not unstable and Blackwood has nothing to reproach himself for. On each occasion, Blackwood was beaten by a perfect shot. The Avalanche controlled the puck most of the night. Toronto is a great team and had very few scoring chances. But when a team has Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Tavares, they need little space to make their opponent pay the price. It’s true that most of these players are not at the same level as Rantanen and don’t earn 12M per year but they are still of the NHL caliber.

To add on to this, this type of defensive play should’ve been expected tonight with new players added too, bwood is allowed to have an off night, and the new guys being thrown into the fire, especially on the PK, probably didn’t help his case, but the goaltending still looked way better than what it COULD’VE been lol.

The team is completely different. Only 3 forwards and one defenseman did not collect points. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen that. On paper, this team compares favourably to the team that won the last Stanley Cup in 2022. This team has become entertaining to watch again.

I´m going to join the negative train screaming negatively about this or that: today´s situation looks a bit too good to be true given what this circus looked like some games in to the season.
So what´s going to happen?

Oh well, hopefully nothing.

Every Avs fan should be excited and happy.

Malinski has been a bit of an enigma. When he came to the Avs he looked like he could develop in to a poor man´s Makar = very good playmaker. His defensive play was so poor however that he must have been ordered to not take the risks that he was used to taking during all of his career. Now he is really confused. Then he starts to play much better defensively but his offensive output disappears more or less completely. Is there a happy middle ground? Is Malinski seriously being groomed – in a positive note? Of all the… Read more »

How do you know that Malinski wasn’t part of a deal that didn’t go through? Not all proposed deals get to the finish line. That said, his game has stepped up since the break. It’s his first full season in the NHL and it’s a grind. The break appears to have been beneficial for him

Except for the first part of the third period, I thought the Avs were too much for the Leafs tonight. There were a few defensive breakdowns, which is not surprising with all the new guys, and the Leafs capitalised. Overall the Avs were just better and they certainly felt deeper than Toronto. The top lines cancelled each other out and the Avs won by having the better second, third and fourth lines. I liked the Sams tonight. Especially Malinski, who seems to have found his offensive game again. That play before the first goal was a thing of beauty! That… Read more »

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Malinski’s game has improved greatly since they stopped having him play & paired with Middleton.

Dave North

That is a valid point

Many defensive lapses against a team like Toronto lead to multiple goals. But my word, this is the first team since the Cup team where all four lines can hurt you. And a lot more grit and size. Maybe this will allow Bedsy to cut down minutes for the top two lines. Nelson fits this team like a couple grand tailored suit. Kiviranta continues to shine on the penalty kill and with scoring lately. I thought Malinski was magnificent last night. His hockey smarts have really improved and you can’t deny his skating skills. Plus – great decision making. All… Read more »

After reading the Toronto Sun, it said “It was Toronto’s first regulation loss in Denver since 2009.” Yikes!!! Sixteen years!
