Gabriel Landeskog Takes Next Step in Recovery, Joins AHL Eagles for Morning Skate

Gabriel Landeskog is going to join the AHL Colorado Eagles for their morning skate on Saturday, an Avalanche team spokesman said Friday evening.
Landeskog will not play in the game and is not officially on a conditioning assignment. With the Avs on the road, this allows him an opportunity to continue skating with a team rather than on his own. He’ll join the Avalanche for practice on Monday when they are back in Denver.
The longtime captain is also expected to meet with media soon, although nothing has officially been scheduled just yet.
This update is a little bit different from anything over the past couple of seasons. Does it signal a change in his recovery? I think so. Simply because the team felt it was important for him to skate with the Eagles rather than wait until Monday.
It’s also the first time in a while that an update of this magnitude was shared with local media. Landeskog often joins morning skates and practices without any real announcement. Combine that with the fact that a press conference is looming at a later date, and it feels like a Landeskog return might very well be coming soon.
There’s also this from Erik Johnson, who was asked about Landeskog ahead of Colorado’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the week.
“We’re excited for him. I know he’s put in a lot of work, time, money, resources, everything. We’re pulling for him,” Johnson said on the TNT broadcast. “I think it’s a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ anymore.”
