Necas, Avalanche Still Negotiating Contract Extension: ‘We’ll See What’s Going to Happen’
Reports that Martin Necas wasn’t happy in Colorado after the trade were probably premature. Necas reiterated several times at the Avalanche’s season-opening media day on Wednesday that he likes how he fits in with the group.
But the 26-year-old forward still doesn’t have much of an update on where things are headed with contract negotiations. It’s worth noting, however, that Necas confirmed the two sides are in active communication.
“We’re talking, we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Necas said. “Can’t really tell you. I don’t even know. So it’ll be interesting. It’s more [being handled by] my agent.”
Necas is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. He was acquired by the Avs in January along with Jack Drury in a blockbuster trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.
It’s déjà vu for the Avs and their fan base. And not the good kind.
Last year’s surprising trade happened because Rantanen entered the new season without an extension and the two sides couldn’t come to terms on a deal for months. He was suddenly shipped out of town and it completely changed the outlook of Colorado’s lineup.
Ultimately, Rantanen and his new team, the Dallas Stars, had the last laugh in Game 7 of the first-round series against Colorado.
As for Necas, before the 2024-25 season began, he signed a two-year deal with the Canes carrying a $6.5 million AAV. That’s the contract that he’ll complete this season.
The Avs’ top winger is coming off a career-high 83-point season. Despite the midseason trade, Necas adjusted well in Colorado and built instant chemistry with top center Nathan MacKinnon. But being here to start camp is going to make things easier.
Perhaps he can reach another gear.
“There were a lot of things happening and being traded during the year wasn’t easy,” Necas said. “But I felt it was a good opportunity here. And now, being here starting with the camp and kind of getting to know the guys way more is great. I’m excited for the season.
“The way we play here. I think it fits my game.”
