COLORADO AVALANCHE GAME 5 REPORT CARD

Alex Newhook (D) – Didn’t play with the puck much. His line was mostly chasing the puck. I still think he should be in the lineup right now, because he can create something high-level out of nowhere sometimes.

Andrew Cogliano (B-) – Only played 5:21. Still managed to have eight Corsi events for, three against.

Artturi Lehkonen (C) – No points and no shots on net. Still played pretty well defensively.

Bo Byram (B+) – Had a pretty nice game. Five shots on net, good puck-possession numbers. Also blocked three shots.

Cale Makar (B) – Had an assist, five shots on net and six hits. Took a tough tripping minor, though, that Jared Bednar said “stung.”

Darren Helm (D) – Lost 10-of-13 faceoffs. No points, one shot on net in his 10:35 of ice time.

Devon Toews (B) – Had an assist and pretty good puck-possession numbers.

Erik Johnson (C+) – Played fine in his own end, but play at the other end lacked much of anything. Not that he should be a scorer, but just didn’t seem involved in any kind of offensive structure.

Gabe Landeskog (C) – He had the puck a lot (25-10 Corsi) but didn’t do anything with it. No points, one shot. He overpassed at times. Won more faceoffs than he lost again, at least.

J.T. Compher (F) – Terrible game. Took two penalties, barely ever had the puck, no shots on net, no points.

Jack Johnson (B) – Played pretty well in his own end and had a team-leading eight hits.

Josh Manson (C) – Not a good night possession-wise. He did block four shots, but he was just a little too average overall.

Logan O’Connor (D) – Just not a good night for LOC. No points, no shots, bad Corsi numbers (7-16).

Mikko Rantanen (D) – Not much of anything from Moose in Game 5. No points, one shot on net. Overpassed too much.

Nathan MacKinnon (C) – Had six shots on net, but lost 10-of-13 faceoffs, was caught running around too much on the Palat winning goal.

Nazem Kadri (C+) – After that heroic Game 4, he looked just mortal again. No points, but he did have seven shots on goal. Still not taking faceoffs, with the bad thumb.

Nico Sturm (C) – Only played 6:07, 1:29 of which on the PK. Not much to talk about offensively.

Valeri Nichushkin (A) – A goal, assist and five shots on net. He was the best forward on the ice for the Colorado Avalanche.

Darcy Kuemper (C) – Three goals on 29 shots. Got beat on a long slap shot by light-scoring Lightning D Jan Ruuta in first period. A little too scramble on Palat’s game-winner. Playoff save percentage back under the Mendoza line, at .898.
