Evan’s NHL Daily: Overtime Changes Coming? Crosby Still Has It
If you’re like me and you don’t really love what the current 3-on-3 overtime format has evolved into, you’ll love that the NHL is looking into potential changes to the extra period. What exactly are those changes? The NHL still seems to be figuring that out themselves.
With the Colorado Avalanche, we took a look back at their big win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday evening.
All that and more in this Wednesday edition of Evan’s Daily.

Pierre Lacroix is officially a Hall of Fame.
Jonathan Drouin and Tomas Tatar both chipped in during the win over the Kraken, and Alexandar Georgiev stabilized just a little bit.
Caleb Jones made an immediate impact in his Avalanche debut. (+)
On Wednesday, we’ll be live at Ball Arena covering the Avs game against Greg Cronin and the Anaheim Ducks. Also, a translated interview with Nikolai Kovalenko, where he discussed his goals when he comes to North America.

Overtime Changes?
When the NHL went to 3-on-3 in overtime, it was a ton of fun. End-to-end action, lots of excitement, everything. It was great.
Now? It’s a lot of possession, a lot of circling back if you don’t have the right play, and the excitement is gone. It was bound to happen. Once coaches get used to something, they figure out the best strategies to win, and maintaining possession is certainly the best strategy.
Well, sounds like the NHL might be leaning towards some changes.
Sounds like changes could be coming for NHL 3-on-3 OT. Lots of discussion about reducing puck possession, potentially by trying to make “half court” rules on circling back in your own zone.

I would love a “half court” rule. Watching teams regroup and regroup and regroup until they get the perfect zone entry is boring. Sure, coaches will eventually figure something out with that, but that won’t happen right away.
Here are some other potential options…
Since I've gotten this question a lot today, this is what NHL VP of hockey operations Colin Campbell said about OT format changes:
“We haven't gotten to whether it should be longer or whether we should get rid of the shootout. We don't mind the format."

So what do you think? What changes would you make to overtime?

Sidney Crosby, at the age of 36, is still one of the best players in the NHL. On Tuesday, he scored a hat trick, leading the Penguins over the Blue Jackets.
Matt Petgrave is currently being held by police on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of Adam Johnson.
Don’t look now, but the Vegas Golden Knights have lost three of their last four games.
The Detroit Red Wings are one of a handful of teams in the mix for Patrick Kane.
The New Jersey Devils are struggling without their top two centers.
