Deen’s Daily: Furious Bednar; Wedgewood Hurt in Avalanche’s Epic Comeback; Landeskog Skates

Published

on

How’s that for the first Avalanche game in 2025? Jared Bednar was fired up postgame about a goal that came following an injury to his goalie Scott Wedgewood. The Avalanche went on to complete a magnificent comeback against Buffalo. Also, Gabriel Landeskog was spotted on the ice for the first time in almost two months.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — January 3

Colorado Hockey Now

Jared Bednar was livid postgame when asked about the goal Buffalo scored after Scott Wedgewood went down with an injury. Colorado’s head coach will likely face a fine from the league for his comments and criticism of the referees. But it didn’t stop him from speaking his mind.

Wedgewood “will miss some time,” according to Bednar. However, further updates will follow today’s noon practice at Family Sports.

Lost in all of the postgame comments was the Avalanche’s epic comeback against the Sabres. Catch Colleen Flynn’s 10 Observations from a game where the Avs trailed 5-3 with just under two minutes remaining but went on to win.

The eventful day for the Avalanche started at morning skate. Gabriel Landeskog skated with the team for the first time since Nov. 15. And we also got an update on the status of Valeri Nichushkin.

Bowen Byram also caught up with media before his first game back at Ball Arena since being traded to Buffalo.

Hi everyone,
I’m an Avs fan from Poland, and unfortunately, I can only watch the NHL on the Viaplay platform. Avs games are broadcast via Altitude Sports. Were there any technical issues with Altitude Sports during the last two games? I experienced frequent lagging, and I’d like to know if it’s an issue with Altitude or Viaplay. I’d appreciate your response.

Hi, I live in Colorado. The game last night was broadcasted only on local TV over the air. You can get it out on Altitude on Direct TV through Roku, but only on a delayed broadcast after the game is over. Plus you might have to be in the region as well. Also you can get Altitude + on Roku with out Direct TV which might be the way to go in your case. Hopefully that helps you.

Johnathan Toews has been linked to the Colorado Avalanche. What say ye, Aarif?

‘NHL on Amazon: Johnathan Toews recently explained he’s contemplating his return to the NHL. Insider Frank Seravalli links three teams who could potentially land the three-time Stanley Cup Champion, naming the Winnipeg Jets, Colorado Avalanche, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.” https://newjerseyhockeynow.com/2025/01/03/new-jersey-devils-news-jonathan-toews-ryan-graves-gabriel-landeskog-dylan-cozens-nhl-trade/

If he really is feeling better, will take a cheap deal and play 3C, sure.

May as well. With how often this team gets injuries they honestly need around 50 or so able bodies on standby. J. Toews would be a welcome addition. He can be the teams next “Parise” but hopefully with a greater ending.

I was listening to 32 thoughts & they touched on Toews wanting to play again. And my first thought was the Avs kicking the tires on that (similar to Parise last year).

My only hesitation would be he hasn’t played hockey in 2 plus years. And he was a shell of what he once was the last time we saw him. But then you look at the Avs center depth & you figure maybe it’s worth a shot?

I saw Trent Miner play for the Eagles a week ago here in Arizona against the Roadrunners and he was excellent. I think he can hold the fort down until Wedgie comes back.

There are 3 back-to-backs and 18 games between now and the February break. I would expect Blackwood to get the bulk of the remaining games, maybe 12 of them.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Wedgie is coming back from this one at any time soon and maybe not even this season. From what I saw, the back of his lower leg was landed on with full force in an area that would be ripe to A: Break the fibula or B: Cause a tear or blow out of Achilles. He could not bear any weight on it at all which is not a good sign. If the Avs aren’t going to solely ride Blackwood the rest of the way they will likely need to be looking for another backup. Hopefully… Read more »

One of the things I like is reading articles from the other Hockey Now sites. NJ is a team built like the Avs. It is has a great top 6 forward unit, a good defense, and good goaltending, but lacks secondary scoring. “We’re now halfway through the 2024-25 regular season, which is enough to come to terms with the fact that this is who this Devils team is. A top-heavy team on offense who relies on their speed, skill, and special teams to convert on wins. They’ve added the elements of being defensively responsible and physical, which has led also… Read more »
